Finally, Proton

Last Monday, on the very front page of the "Ekonomi" section in Berita Harian, an article writes "Proton mampu berdikari". This article explains how Proton is now moving forward due to its success in their customer feedback on the latest Proton Saga and Persona.

Proton's CEO, Syed Zainal Syed Mohamad Tahir said,

"Semua usaha dilaksanakan sudah berhasil. Tanggungjawab Proton besar dan apa yang penting ialah mengeluarkan model disukai pembeli"

And the article further writes,

"Namun, katanya kunci kejayaan pembaharuan itu yang menekankan aspek mutu ialah Proton tidak boleh lagi mengeluarkan model 'syok sendiri'"

"Kami perlu mengeluarkan model disukai dan ia terbukti berjaya apabila Persona dan Saga baru mendapat sambutan."

Dumbfounded at first, then I thought "Oh, Yay..... Errr, Congratulations... Proton...."

After a looong 23 years in the business, FINALLY Proton got the secret formula of how to actually make cars: produce models that customers like. I could imagine the CEO in his office shouting with pride "Oh My God!!! Guys, Check this OUT!!! I got the secret formula!!!! We need, to make cars, that our customers love!!!! Wooot!!"

Lame...

Right now, let's cross our fingers and hope it won't take Proton another 23 years to finally learn that cars have four wheels.

as a person in this industry, i strongly think that is not easy to produce model yg x syok sendiri.anyway, proton is the only national car manufacturer (other like perodua, naza are just assembler). so, we have to support them.

to me, supporting is one thing, while the motivation and the drive for excellence should be another.. proton has long been enjoying the support from malaysians all these while (due to the import & excise duty) but lacks the drive for excellence, or to be number 1, BUT, recently i'd have to say that proton is doing a lot of progress and moving towards greater heights starting with persona.. i'm glad for the improvements and would welcome any effort within proton to make the company better - for the sake of the nation...

the biggest problem here is that, they are too small. you might be surprised to know that they are not even listed on 40 Top vehicle manufacturing groups. they cant afford to achieve ecomonies of scale, so proton's per unit price is higher than others.

you cant compare them with toyota or GM. they are too big in term of volume and their cars carry several brand. GM can sell Deawoo in Malaysia using Chevvy brand and sell the same car to australian with the Holden brand.

Toyota own Daihatsu and Subaru. Daihatsu own Perodua. Toyota boon can be Myvi in Malaysia, Daihatsu Sirion in Indonesia, Subaru Justy in UK.

DID U SEE MY POINT?

alright2, calm down, bro, no caps if possible alright..

bro, thanks for the insight, and i do get your point.. i've learned some economics and i also know a little bit about the concept of economies of scale..

well, proton not being the top 40 should not be very surprising.. i also know how to relatively compare car companies once i've been out of malaysia and having read some articles about how challenging to do business in this industry (mitsubishi didn't gain profit for some years before, and even the US is now considering bailing out their troubled auto companies).. so, yes, it is a tough business..

i'm no persistent proton basher whatsoever - my family bought protons and my first car might be a proton too

u see, i do agree small companies need protective measures such as the tax, but when there's no specific deadlines as to when to get to what level, doesn't that make proton a little bit complacent/too relaxed about doing their business? the fact of the matter is, isn't it true that a lot of things couldve been done more efficiently in the past?

in picking the vendors for example.. i don't know but i've heard some vendors aren't efficient, low quality check and charges high prices but proton sticks to these vendors for cronyism reasons.. for example, how come small issues such as the easily-broken power window takes about 20 years to fix? to me, that can't be justified by just saying "oh, sorry, we don't have economies of scale so please excuse us"...

see, there's a difference between excuses and really wanting to get the best of everything... well, proton doesn't necessarily need to be number one, but at least show effort to do things better from time to time.. it is all in relative terms... tomorrow should be better than today... and thats why i gave credit to proton in my previous comment because recently im seeing attitudes have changed and it seems like proton is going in the right direction...

congratulations proton guys.. just make the most out of what malaysia can do in this challenging auto industry... and to mr5zal, thanks for your comments...

p/s: lol, my comment is like another blog post long... and i also got an exam tomorrow i better make the best out of what i can too, instead of just talking about it...

adi dalie pun mudah lupa. my 1st car is Waja 1.6 Premium. i change it because it just not suit me becoz i look much older with that car. i was 22 years old then.

and the waja comes with a lot of problem. drive shaft, power window, leaking, door opener, wiring, and some other stupid problem. i thought,'maybe it is not my luck terbeli proton yg banyak defect'. besides, masa tu baru2 grad lagi so kena banyak saving.

ada faham ka adi?
